Annette Taddeo Says Monroe County Deserves a Fair Deal

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen once again clearly demonstrated that she has lost touch with the people of Monroe County in Florida's 18th District.

After five months of pleading from Florida Keys' constituents, Ros-Lehtinen wrote a letter to FEMA in which she expressed her "serious concern over the accuracy of flood maps maintained... for the purpose of determining Monroe County property owners' eligibility in the National Flood Insurance Program."

The people of Florida's 18th District deserve a representative in Congress that understands the real issues they face and takes a leadership role in resolving them. This letter, unfortunately, does not reflect such an understanding, nor does it show leadership on this crucial issue.

Annette Taddeo understands the issue is not with FEMA's flood maps. Rather, the issue lies in the designation of certain plots of land as habitats for endangered species. These designations make the plots ineligible for flood insurance.

Annette Taddeo is passionately committed to protecting our environment, and she is also committed to ensuring a fair deal for the people of Monroe County. "We must create a balance between preservation and people's livelihoods," Taddeo said. "If some properties cannot be insured without harming endangered species' habitats, then the owners of those properties are entitled to fair compensation."

Taddeo added: "This is exactly the sort of issue that the District's Representative should be taking care of. It is not enough to pose for a photograph or write a letter; the people of South Florida deserve a Congresswoman who will truly represent their interests and will fight for them every day in Washington."
