Hare Urges President to Reiterate Commitment to Trade Enforcement in Meeting with Hu

Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Trade Working Group, today released the following statement in advance of President Obama's meeting with President Hu of China.

"There is little doubt that President Hu will use today's bilateral meeting to complain about President Obama's recent decision to impose a 35 percent tariff on tires imported from China. I urge President Obama to stand firm. China has violated international trade laws time and time again, and a response was overdue. After a week of threats from Chinese officials and false claims about protectionism, it may seem tempting to pull back. But this is exactly the time to reiterate to China that it must play by the rules. We have an obligation to defend America's workers and businesses from unfair trade practices."
