Lummis: Troops Funding Bill Used For Gitmo Terrorist Transfer

Press Release

Date: Dec. 16, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., issued the following statement following passage of the defense funding bill, which allows for the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States:

"The terrorists being held at Guantanamo Bay are there for a reason. They are enemy combatants apprehended on the battlefield while fighting American soldiers. It defies logic that Democrats are using the same bill to fund our troops to bring the very terrorists they are fighting onto sacred American soil. Every day, the members of our armed services and intelligence agencies fight to keep these people as far away from our country as possible. This is a purely political stunt which could have serious national security ramifications."

Background
The bill, H.R. 3326, allows for the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the U.S. for purposes of prosecution and detention. The Obama Administration is moving forward with a plan to transfer the detainees to a prison in Thomson, Illinois.
