Washington Needs To Reduce Wasteful Spending

Statement

Date: March 11, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Kline issued the following statement expressing his strong support for the proposed House Republican earmark moratorium, which will be voted on later this morning. For four years, Congressman Kline has refused to participate in the earmarking process, instead advocating that federal funding decisions should be based on merit, rather than a Member's seniority, party affiliation, or the committees on which they serve.:

"In these challenging and uncertain times, no amount of economic stimulus or reform will solve our economy's ills without action to address out-of-control government spending. Over the years, the congressional earmarking process has evolved into a corrupt and broken system with no regard for merit. While both political parties share the blame for this wasteful practice that has eroded public confidence in our ability to marshal our nation's financial resources, House Republicans should lead the way by imposing an immediate ban on earmarking. Washington needs to end pork-barrel spending, and this would be a good first step toward wiping the slate clean and allowing us to get spending under control."
