Dear Secretary Napolitano:
According to the Chicago Tribune, John Morton, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said, "his agency will not necessarily process illegal immigrants referred to them by Arizona officials." Whether Secretary Morton agrees with the actions taken in Arizona is irrelevant, he has a solemn obligation to enforce the rule of law. We are writing to express our outrage and request that you publicly condemn these comments as quickly as possible.
The Arizona State Legislature passed SB 1070 and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed it into law because the federal government had failed in its responsibility to enforce federal law. This failure to address the enforcement of illegal immigration has caused our citizens to pay the price for unsecured borders through greater unemployment, higher costs and taxes for health care, public safety, education and social services.
As Governor of Arizona, you demanded a 100 percent response from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) when Arizona law enforcement requested their assistance. We expect nothing less now that you are Secretary.
As Members of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, we appreciate your expedient attention to this matter. We look forward to hearing from you on this important issue.
Sincerely,
