Hare: Bush-Negotiated Trade Deals Would Export American Jobs

Statement

Date: July 7, 2010
Issues: Trade

Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Trade Working Group, today released the following statement in response to President Obama's remarks at the White House announcing his Administration's "Export Council."

"President Obama's goal of doubling exports in the next five years is a worthy one. But I was again disappointed to hear the President advocate passage of the Bush-negotiated unfair trade deals with Panama, Colombia, and South Korea. Doubling their main exports--American jobs--would be catastrophic for our workers and the economy, both of which are already reeling. The President campaigned on forging a new direction on trade that puts American workers on a level playing field with their foreign counterparts. I regret that today's announcement is simply a repackaging of old, failed policies."
