Statement by Robert Hurt in Response to False Allegations Made by Congressman Perriello

The Robert Hurt for U.S. Congress campaign today released the below statement from Robert Hurt responding to false allegations made by Congressman Perriello that a 2007 vote taken by Senator Hurt raised electric rates:

"It's unfortunate to see Congressman Perriello disingenuously distort my record on this issue as he engages in more "politics as usual' on the campaign trail. Regrettably, the most recent campaign rhetoric from Congressman Perriello does a disservice to the people of the 5th District as it shows Virginia voters that he will say or do whatever it takes to get elected.

"The fact is that my votes in the General Assembly helped to lower electric rates for Virginia families and small businesses. As Congressman Perriello knows or should know, the rate increases we saw this past winter were based upon a law that predates my vote for the 2007 bill.

"If Congressman Perriello would like to have a discussion about increasing electricity costs, it's a debate I welcome to have.

"There is only one candidate in this race who knowingly took an on the record vote that would lead to an increase in electric rates for Virginia, and that is Congressman Perriello. The Congressman unabashedly voted in favor of Cap and Trade that he has fully admitted would cause electricity bills to increase for Virginians, and he continues to stand by his vote today.

"As we try to get our economy back on track, we don't need another Congressman in Washington who will support a job-killing national energy tax that only raises utility bills for consumers, expands government regulation and intervention, and increases the cost of doing business in the 5th District."
