Blog: Celebrating the Strength of the American Worker

Statement

On Monday, America will celebrate the strength of the American worker with Labor Day. If I'm convinced of anything, it's that our workforce is one of the greatest strengths our country has. Each American worker creates more wealth than the workers of any other country in the world. America still has the most productive workforce in the world. We're still the world's hub of innovation and finance. And we're still the place that every boy and girl around the globe dreams of coming to for a better life.

Our government's role should be to calm businesses' nerves by providing a positive atmosphere in a tough economic environment, and then get out of the way to unleash the power and ingenuity of the American economy. We need to extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to allow more money for investment and consumer spending to stay in the marketplace. We need to reject new, burdensome regulations. And we need to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. If we follow that playbook, the sleeping giant of American enterprise will go back to creating the jobs and prosperity that the American worker deserves.

We deserve better. We are a people that thrive on making the goods that make lives better, like life-saving drugs, buildings that put roofs over heads, food for families' tables, and technology to communicate with loved ones. We don't ask for handouts. We ask for the chance to work. On November 2, I hope you will join me in putting an end to the job-killing policies of this Congress, and together we'll put America back to work.
