Issue Position

The United States is fortunate beyond measure for the foresight of our Founding Fathers. They didn't all agree. But they considered and debated issues that shape our country today. When debating the Constitution in 1787, they rightly worried that the central government would grow too big. So they wisely added a Bill of Rights that spelled out limits on the Federal government.

I think about the solemn responsibilities of our Founders. They knew they were risking their lives to outline these revolutionary ideas. They spelled out that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It doesn't get much clearer than that. Yet, there is no shortage of legislation in Congress to limit this right the Founders named for us.

As your representative in Congress, I will take seriously my duty to protect our Constitutional directives. I have been licensed to carry a gun since I was 22. I go to the firing range and shoot on the family farm. Folks like me--or Georgia's hunters or those who just wish to protect their home--do not need more gun laws on top of the dozens in place now. The law-abiding citizens follow these laws and the criminals do not.

In Congress, I will stand up for gun owners and against further restrictions. Let's penalize those who use firearms in the commission of a crime but not those of us who use guns for recreation or sports. Let's not write more laws the bad guys will just ignore.

Thomas Jefferson had it right when he said, "NO free man shall ever be debarred from the use of arms." I stand with you and with him.
