Corker Statement on the DREAM Act

Statement

Date: Dec. 9, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

U.S. Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said today he cannot support the DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act because he believes it would likely have the effect of encouraging illegal immigration. Corker today voted to table a motion to debate the DREAM Act.

"My staff and I have had several meetings with supporters of the DREAM Act and my heart goes out to the students that find themselves in a difficult situation through no fault of their own, but I cannot support legislation that would likely have the effect of encouraging illegal immigration," Corker said. "I believe the American people want to know that we're enforcing the laws that are actually on the books before we make advances in other ways."
