Whitfield Opposes Giving Benefits to Illegal Immigrants

Statement

U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield, (KY-01) today voted against amnesty for illegal immigrants under the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM, Act. The Act, if signed into law, proposes to provide certain illegal alien students who graduate from U.S. high schools the opportunity to earn residency if they complete two years in the military or two years at a four year institution of higher learning.

Following the vote, Congressman Whitfield issued the following statement:

"I remain opposed to this bill and do not support amnesty or any other rewards that compensate individuals who have broken our laws. This bill would also add billions to our deficit that taxpayers simply cannot afford. I believe that this country must enforce our current immigration laws and also update them to address the evolving threats to our nation's borders, security, and economy. We must not reward those who have broken our immigration laws."
