Passage of the DREAM Act

This week the House voted to approve the DREAM Act which would create a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. These children had no control over how they came to this country, and it is unfair to punish them for their parents' decisions. This legislation targets only the best and brightest young people who are fully invested in contributing to this country. These children are already in our education system, and in order for us to see the benefits of this significant investment in their schooling, we must provide them with a path to citizenship. This measure has strict time requirements and guidelines for those that qualify, but it will afford them the opportunity to go to college or serve in the military, which will help improve our economy and national security for years to come.

Construction Begins at St. Clair Senior Apartments

Construction on a 33-unit apartment building devoted to providing safe, affordable housing for seniors began this week. This $7.6 million project, known as the St. Clair Senior Apartments, will be located at the intersection of East 10th Street and North Keystone Avenue as part of the Super Bowl Legacy development area. While many organizations, public and private, played an important role in moving this project forward, I was very pleased to work with the Department of Health and Human Services to resolve an issue that had prevented construction from starting.

Landmark Food Safety Rules Enacted

Over the last few years, a string of food-borne illnesses have occurred in foods consumed by millions of Americans each day. These outbreaks demonstrate quite clearly the widespread problems within our current food safety system. That's why the Food Safety Enhancement Act is so important. This landmark bill fundamentally changes the way we protect our food supply by eliminating safety and inspection gaps, giving greater authority to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), utilizing new enforcement tools and creating a new source of funding to carry out this vital mission. These improvements will enable the FDA to perform more frequent inspections of food processing facilities and to pinpoint the source of food-borne illnesses. The time for a modern food safety system in the U.S. has finally come.
