Congressman Stephen Fincher (TN-08) today was appointed to three key House subcommittees with broad oversight over national transportation and infrastructure issues.

U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) tapped Congressman Fincher to serve on the Subcommittee on Aviation; the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management; and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials.

"We must do more with less and eliminate wasteful spending when it comes to rebuilding our nation's infrastructure and putting people back to work," said Chairman Mica. "Congressman Fincher's experience running the family farm and facing the tough economic choices that many of our farming businesses make him a valuable addition to these subcommittees. His background will allow him to immediately contribute to the work of producing fiscally responsible legislation to improve our infrastructure."

"These subcommittee assignments place me in a position to enhance transportation and spur job growth in West Tennessee and our nation," said Congressman Fincher. "We need to focus on projects like the megasite in Brownsville, the Port in Lake County, and the many other major transportation projects in West Tennessee that are helping foster job creation and economic development in our region." Fincher continued, "It all comes down to responsible investments in our nation's infrastructure, which will help create jobs for Main Street, putting many Americans back to work."

The Subcommittee on Aviation oversees aviation safety and infrastructure and the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration, including NextGen air traffic control modernization. The Subcommittee also monitors the impacts of transportation security on aviation safety, the traveling public, and the industry. The Subcommittee is responsible for writing the next major multi-year authorization of the nation's aviation infrastructure and safety programs and policies.

The Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management authorizes the nation's emergency preparedness policy and programs and conducts oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Subcommittee oversees agencies and programs promoting economic development in communities suffering economic distress, such as the Appalachian Regional Commission. The Subcommittee also exercises oversight of federal real estate programs and management.

The Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials has jurisdiction over the economic and safety regulation of railroads and the agencies that administer those regulations. The Subcommittee also oversees federal passenger rail programs and Amtrak. The transportation of hazardous materials and pipeline safety also fall under the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee.
