House of Representatives Begins Consideration of FY2011 Continuing Resolution

On Tuesday, February 15, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives began consideration of H.R. 1, the Continuing Resolution for FY 2011. Congressman Rob Woodall (R-GA-07) issued the following statement:

"Our efforts toward fiscal reform in the House began today when Congress commenced debate on the Continuing Resolution (CR) that will take us to the end of the fiscal year. The previous Congress and President Obama failed to pass a budget and the individual appropriations bill last year, so the responsibility has fallen to the new Congress."

"As my colleagues and I begin our work this week, the American people will witness two things never before seen on the House Floor in modern times. First, they will see Congress consider this seven-month spending bill [the CR] under an open process where any member of Congress can have their germane ideas heard and considered. Never before has a CR come to the House Floor in this way. This open process is a credit to Speaker Boehner and the Republican Leadership for allowing the House to work its will--to truly represent the people--in this way."

"Second, the American people will see a real cut--a double digit cut--in discretionary spending. These cuts are not a reduction in the rate of growth, not a sleight of hand or funny math--these are challenging and painful cuts. However, making tough decisions is a part of leadership. Our fiscal path is not an easy one, but it will only get worse if we fail to confront our reckless spendinghead-on."
