Statement from Congressman Tom Reed on U.S. Military Operations in Libya

Statement

Date: March 29, 2011

"We all support the concept of democracy in the Middle East and everywhere on the globe, and we stand behind our servicemen and women who are in harm's way. I was hoping to hear President Obama finally provide the American people and Congress with a crystal clear rationale for inserting our military into the Libyan civil war and with a clear definition of success. I am still waiting to hear it. Our military is currently spread very thin strengthening the fledgling democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan along with other on-going military commitments. Protecting civilians is a noble goal, but we will be watching very closely to see that the mission does not grow beyond that basic definition. Hot spots are flaring throughout the Middle East and we need to be very careful about further direct military involvement in that region."
