AP - Hewes, Reeves discuss education ideas at forum

The two Republican candidates for lieutenant governor say they want to improve education in Mississippi, and they're presenting slightly different ideas.

State Sen. Billy Hewes of Gulfport says he wants to create dual tracks for high school diplomas - college preparatory and vocational. He wants help create charter schools and combine some districts' administrative functions without closing local schools.

State Treasurer Tate Reeves of Flowood says Mississippi needs to focus on improving the academic performance of the upper 25% of students.

The candidates spoke Tuesday to teenagers at American Legion Boys State on the University of Southern Mississippi campus. They compete in the Aug. 2 primary.

No Democrat is running for lieutenant governor. The Reform Party's Tracella Lou O'Hara Hill will be on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.
