U.S. Rep. Nan Hayworth, M.D. (NY-19) issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 822, the National Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, which requires states to recognize valid state-issued concealed carry permits issued by other states. The bill makes no changes to any state's laws on where or when concealed firearms may be carried within its borders:

"As a doctor and a mother, I take very seriously my role in protecting the safety and security of our families, friends, and communities. The Supreme Court has recognized the constitutional right of all law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.

"Across the United States, years of experience have demonstrated the safety of concealed weapons permits. Much like reciprocity among states for drivers' licenses, the bill we passed in the House of Representatives today simply requires that a concealed-carry permit issued by one state be recognized in all other states that have concealed-carry laws.

"Further, this bill protects New York state laws governing where and in what manner concealed weapons may be carried. I remain committed to addressing the issue of illegal possession of firearms. As a Member of Congress, I will defend our Second-Amendment right to bear arms, and also work to the best of my ability to assure the safety of our communities."
