Issue Position: Mending Our Health Care System

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

The Health Care Reform Act passed last year was one step, but much more needs to be done to mend our broken health care system. Costs are still far too high and coverage is becoming increasingly elusive for far too many families and small businesses. From insurance coverage to research, from wellness checkups to end-of-life care, and from chronic illness, sudden medical emergencies and nursing home care to the availability of the finest care for the most vulnerable in our society, the problems facing us now need careful attention to every detail in policy so that hard-working Americans need never sacrifice their life's savings and their children's future because of the cost of prescription drugs, health insurance, or life-saving care. We need to approach health care reform not just as a problem of how to provide insurance to patients--we must also ensure that medical professionals can embrace health care as a rewarding career, and that the insurance companies and hospitals that provide these services can do so sustainably. This cannot be done in one piece of legislation; but Maine people can rest assured that as their senator, I will fight for every improvement to our health care system.
