Rep. Becerra Video Statement on Pride Month

Statement

Date: June 1, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Marriage

"Hello, I'm Congressman Xavier Becerra.

"In May, President Barack Obama became the first sitting President in United States history to endorse marriage equality. This was an historic milestone in our fight to secure equal rights for all Americans.

"As a long-time advocate for equality, I applauded the President for his leadership, for being bold, speaking from the heart and reaffirming America's founding principle of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' for all Americans regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

"This June marks the 43rd anniversary of the Stonewall riots, an event largely regarded as the birth of the modern LGBT movement for civil rights in the United States.

"Since then, enormous advancements have been made including the passage of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

"These actions fortify our commitment to value every American's life equally -- both publicly and privately.

"All Americans should have their civil rights respected whether they are in the classroom, at work or protecting our country.

"It is a pleasure to honor our LGBT community during Pride Month and I hope you will join me in the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, while celebrating the great gift of diversity.

"Thank you."
