Congressman Rothman's Statement on the Doubling of Student Loan Rates

Statement

Date: June 19, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement:

It is essential that the US House of Representatives take action this week to prevent student loan rates from doubling on July 1. During these tough economic times, it is a particularly counterproductive moment to raise the rates on hardworking students, many of whom are working multiple jobs, in addition to their academic studies, to pay the loans they already have. There are few issues more important than ensuring that hardworking young Americans have the opportunity to receive a college degree. Congress should not be in the business of making it harder for students to access the American dream.

Ignoring this key issue is not a real solution. Now is the time to break the partisan gridlock and for Congress to prevent student loans from doubling on July 1
