Blog: Westmoreland Calls on Senate to Pass Legislation Extending Concealed-Carry Permits Across State Lines

By Representative Lynn Westmoreland

Last November, the House passed H.R.822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011. As an avid gun owner and strong Second Amendment supporter, I was a co-sponsor of the bill and voted for it. The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act would allow a person who has a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm in one state, carry in another state in accordance with that state's laws.

Unfortunately, after the bill was passed with bipartisan support in the House, it has seen no action in the Senate because of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's anti-gun stance. Well I think it's high time Senator Reid got off his liberal soap box and let the Senate vote on this bill. The only reason he won't is because he knows that a majority of senators -- including many in his own caucus -- would support it. So I call on every senator that truly supports Second Amendment rights, no matter their political party, to demand Senator Reid allow them to vote on H.R. 822 as soon as possible.
