Dr. Benishek Named As Chairman of House Veterans' Subcommittee on Health

Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today was named as the new Subcommittee Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Health for the 113th Congress.

"I am honored to be named as the new Subcommittee Chairman for the Subcommittee on Health. I've had the privilege of working with veterans all my life. First, as a VA doctor in Iron Mountain and now as Michigan's only member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee. Our veterans have fought for our freedoms and they deserve top-notch service when they return home," said Dr. Benishek, who worked at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain for two decades.

"As a physician, and as one who has worked for VA, I could not think of a better person than Dan to lead the Subcommittee on Health," stated Rep. Jeff Miller (FL-01), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. "His dedication to ensuring the best care for our veterans is unmatched, and we are honored to have him lead the way on the Subcommittee this coming Congress."

The Subcommittee on Health has legislative, oversight, and investigative jurisdiction over the Veterans Health Administration including medical services, medical support and compliance, medical facilities, medical and prosthetic research, and major and minor construction.

"Since coming to Congress, I have been listening to our veterans in Northern Michigan and fighting to address issues like the VA disability claims backlog. I am looking forward to continuing to work with Chairman Jeff Miller and all my colleagues--both Democrats and Republicans--on the committee in the 113th Congress to enact meaningful legislation that will help our military veterans and their families," added Dr. Benishek.

There are more than 68,000 veterans living in Michigan's First Congressional District, which accounts for 13.7 percent of the District's population.
