Blog: Keep Your Health Care Plan

Statement

Date: Nov. 15, 2013

Hello this is your congressman, Michael Burges. The president has repeatedly promised, and I quote- "If you like your health care plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what."- end quote. But since open enrollment, we have seen millions of Americans receive termination letters from their health care providers.

Without a doubt, the administration singlehandedly decided to misrepresent the Affordable Care Act to Americans. They have now begun to walk back their own words and have shifted into damage control. Yet, this does nothing to help the millions of Americans now worrying whether or not they will receive their health care next year.

Yesterday, the President held a press conference to announce that he would make an administrative change to the law to allow people to keep their insurance. While I thank the President for admitting that his law is hurting American families, his solution doesn't actually fix the problem. Saying that he is willing to simply ignore part of the law doesn't sufficiently solve the problem, and a press conference doesn't have the force of law. We need the clarity and certainty of legislation passed by Congress.

Please know that I want to provide peace of mind for the Americans who want to keep their health care plans. That is why today I voted for the Keep Your Heath Care Plan Act. This act will allow today's plans available on the individual market to be offered next year, providing millions of Americans the opportunity to keep their policies in 2014 and not face a penalty under the Affordable Care Act.

You know, I believe that all Americans should have the freedom to make their own health care decisions. As a doctor and patient, I know that our health care system needs improvement -- but if you like your doctor you should be able to keep your doctor.

Thank you for taking the time to listen. For more information about this issue and other issues before the United States Congress, please visit my website at burgess.house.gov. May God bless you and your family, and as always, may God bless Texas.
