Berger's Prosecution Results Toughest In North Carolina

Press Release

Date: May 28, 2014

District Attorney Phil Berger's office ranked first in the state in criminal defendants who receive the lengthiest prison sentences allowed by law, according to a report just released by the North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission. Criminals who are sentenced to prison in Rockingham County receive the most severe punishments available, nearly four times the state average, according to the report.

"I promised that I would reform the office, deliver results and hold criminals accountable," said District Attorney Phil Berger. "I stood strong and kept my word, and that's exactly what I'll do in Washington. Others tried to distort my record, but the facts speak for themselves. Criminals in Rockingham County go to prison, and our communities are safer because of the work we've done."

The report also showed the average maximum sentence for criminals in Rockingham was 55.8 months, more than 13 months longer than the state average of 42.6. And Berger's office is ranked in the top three for the longest minimum jail sentence, an average of 39 months.
