Congressman Xavier Becerra: Happy 79th Birthday, Social Security!

Statement

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, released the following statement on the 79th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act of 1935 into law:

"Through eight decades and 13 recessions, Social Security has always been there to pay benefits in full and on time. Today, more than 58 million Americans rely on the benefits they earned from Social Security to live in dignity and with security. It's time for us to repay the favor and work to strengthen and improve Social Security to meet the challenges to come in the decades ahead.

"If we look hard, we'll find that the solutions to keep Social Security strong are really a matter of simple math. Changes to Social Security should recognize its long-term importance to aging Americans throughout the nation.

"On the 79th anniversary of Social Security, Americans have much to celebrate and to be thankful for."
