Today Congressman Garcia, a Vice-Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, praised the ruling of U.S. District Court Judge Robert Hinkle that struck down Florida's ban on same-sex marriage.
"I'm thrilled to see Florida join the growing number of states that uphold equality and recognize the right for same-sex couples to marry, regardless of who you are or who you love," said Garcia. "This is a historic moment for our state and I'm proud to see this decision come on the heels of others in Monroe and Miami-Dade Counties."
In Thursday's ruling, Judge Hinkle decided in a case brought by SAVE and the ACLU that Florida must recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples within the state. However, county clerks will only be able to begin issuing licenses once appeals of the case have been resolved.
"Although this represents a tremendous step forward, there is still much to be done in the fight for full equality in our state. I hope the higher courts act quickly to uphold this ruling and affirm the right to marry for all."
