Issue Position: Protecting Seniors

Issue Position

I believe how we treat our parents and grandparents reflects our values as a country. In Congress, I've stood up to Tea Party Republicans who've tried to dismantle and privatize Social Security and Medicare. I'm committed to protecting these benefits that folks have earned through lifetimes of hard work.

Standing up for Social Security

It's wrong to balance the budget on the backs of seniors. Seniors rely on Social Security that they earned after lifetimes of hard work for their retirement security. I stood up to proposed cuts to Social Security and staunchly oppose any attempt to privatize or cut Social Security benefits. I've also helped our neighbors in central and northwest Connecticut recover over $1,000,000 of their Social Security benefits since taking office.

Protecting Medicare

I voted against the harmful Ryan Budget, which would have ended the Medicare guarantee and cut benefits for over 575,000 Connecticut seniors. I've also helped seniors recover over $300,000 in Medicare benefits. In Congress, I'll continue to stand up to insurance companies that try to unfairly increase insurance premiums or drop doctors from Medicare Advantage plans. And I am a strong supporter of Medicare Part D, which has helped seniors afford life-saving medications.

Supporting home heating assistance

Unfortunately, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has been under assault in Washington. LIHEAP provides critical aid to many Connecticut seniors who cannot afford to heat their homes in the winter. This winter, a woman came to see me in tears because she could not afford to heat her home. I'll never forget her story, and I'll continue to lead efforts in Congress to protect this important program.
