Bishop Statement on Veterans' Group Priority List
Congressman Tim Bishop issued the following statement regarding the release of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's (IAVA) legislative priority list:
"I thank the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America for recognizing my legislation to fight the harmful effects of exposure to toxic burn pits suffered by our brave men and women deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. I am honored to work with IAVA to advance the bill and grateful that this distinguished veterans' advocacy organization has ranked it among its top five legislative priorities for Congress. My bill, "The Helping Veterans Exposed to Toxic Chemicals Act" (HR 2510), will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses suffered by veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan exposed to burn pits, and it ensures we advance research to find the links between exposure and illness. With IAVA's support, this bill can help prevent burn pit exposure from becoming the scourge that Agent Orange was to Vietnam veterans. It is becoming increasingly evident that the current generation of returning veterans is falling ill because of what they were exposed to during their time in service; our veterans deserve a level of care and treatment that is second to none. We have a chance now to prevent repeating past mistakes and to act quickly. I thank the IAVA for its continued support and for identifying my bill as one of its top priorities."
