Congressman Becerra Votes Against $40 Billion Unpaid-For Tax Breaks

Statement

Date: Dec. 3, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against tax legislation (H.R. 5771) that would add over $40 billion to the deficit in unpaid-for tax breaks:

"The disconnect in Washington just seems to be growing. Congress has a responsibility to write tax laws that nurture an economy that works for all Americans, not just the privileged. This bill fails the test of moving our tax system even slightly towards achieving this goal. It loads billions of dollars in deficit spending on the backs of hard-working Americans without providing any long-term certainty for businesses or focusing on what should be our highest priority -- strengthening middle class families. It's time for us to work together on policies that that will move our country forward and build on 56 consecutive months of job growth."
