Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement congratulating Winston-Salem attorney Loretta Biggs on her Senate confirmation as the first African-American woman to serve as a lifetime appointed federal judge for North Carolina:

"I am pleased with yesterday's U.S. Senate confirmation of Loretta Biggs as the first African-American woman to serve as a lifetime appointed federal judge for the state of North Carolina," said Rep. Adams. "It has been a long time coming to have an African-American female serve in this role and I am happy that Loretta is the first. Loretta has brought years of experience and is a hardworking individual who is dedicated to the rule of law. I look forward to having Loretta serve as a federal judge."

Ms. Biggs is a North Carolina Board Certified Family Law Specialist and a Certified Family Law Financial Mediator and has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America and North Carolina Super Lawyers publications. Biggs is a practicing attorney specializing in family law, interstate and international child custody, child support, alimony, complex equitable distribution, mediation and arbitration. She previously served as the Associate Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals and State District Court Judge for the 21st Judicial District, Forsyth County. She also served as an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Law; has been designated as Master, Joseph Branch Inn of Court; and was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to the Court's Commission on Professionalism.
