Chairman Becerra: Pay Gap Is Real And It Hurts Working Families

Statement

Date: April 14, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on Equal Pay Day and the need to address the ongoing pay gap faced by women and their families:

"The pay gap is real and it hurts working families. Today a woman only earns 78 cents for every dollar earned by a man. This is unacceptable; in a recovering economy we should work to ensure every American has the opportunity to succeed. Yet, despite clear evidence, Old World thinkers in Congress continue to impede efforts to strengthen the Equal Pay Act to help ensure women earn equal pay for equal work.

"Our mothers, our wives, and our daughters deserve better. Equal Pay Day is a reminder that wage disparity has no place in the 21st Century. Let's move forward now with legislation that updates the Equal Pay Act, brings us closer to achieving true gender equality, and gives all hardworking families a raise."
