Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement congratulating the Los Angeles Public Library for receiving the 2015 National Medal for Library and Museum Service, which honors outstanding institutions that make "significant and exceptional contributions" to their communities:

"For over 140 years, the Los Angeles Public Library has served our diverse community of Angelenos with dedication and excellence," said Congressman Xavier Becerra. "Under the superb leadership of City Librarian John F. Szabo, the library has become a pioneer in delivering innovative and groundbreaking services to all members of the community. The library's Veteran's Center helps local veterans obtain VA benefits and secure employment. Citizenship Corner offers Angelenos assistance in preparing for their citizenship exams. I join the people of our great city in congratulating John and the hard-working staff of the Los Angeles Public Library system for earning this most prestigious award."

"I want to thank IMLS for recognizing the exceptional efforts of the Los Angeles Public Library," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "Our library's outreach programs exemplify my 'Back to Basics' priorities. When library staff connect Angelenos with resources to pursue citizenship, access health care, or find employment, that is true customer service in action. Our libraries improve lives every day, and this National Medal is well-deserved."

"The Los Angeles Public Library is extremely honored to receive this prestigious award," said City Librarian John F. Szabo, "and to be recognized by IMLS for the library's success in empowering our diverse communities and delivering services that help all residents of Los Angeles reach their goals."
