House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5, the Student Success Act:
"Real education reform starts with taking power out of Washington's hands and giving it back to the people, because nobody knows what is best for a child's future more than the parents who raise them and the teachers who educate them.
"There is no silver bullet to fix our education system, but increasing freedom and accountability is the most basic step to provide opportunity for the next generation. The Student Success Act achieves this by letting states, school districts, and, most importantly, families decide what is best for their children. It provides more opportunities for students stuck in failing schools just because of where they live, and it cuts down on needless waste to make sure our education dollars are spent effectively on learning. And to ensure Washington doesn't meddle and make the problem worse, this bill stops the federal government from coercing states into adopting national standards.
"For students to have the opportunity to succeed, we need an education system that puts faith in students, their families, and their teachers. Washington has proven time and again that it doesn't know best."
