Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled that Arizona's establishment of an independent districting commission is constitutional.
"A fair system to draw district lines is fundamental to a healthy democracy. The voters in Arizona recognized that state legislatures have a perverse incentive to prioritize their own reelection over free and fair elections, so they voted to create an independent redistricting commission to draw fair lines for congressional districts.
"Today's Supreme Court ruling makes it clear that drawing district lines should be fair and equitable, not designed to give parties a political advantage. This isn't just a win for Arizona, it's a win for all Americans."
