Vote to pass a bill that requires employers to provide paid sick leave to service workers, effective January 1, 2012.
Highlights:
Requires employers to provide paid sick leave annually to each of their “service workers” in the state (Sec. 2).
Defines “service worker” as an employee of a certain occupation including, but not limited to, the following (Sec. 1):
Social Workers;
Librarians;
Medical and Health Services Managers
Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics;
Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants;
Cooks, Bartenders, Dishwashers, Waiters and Waitresses; and
Retail Salespersons.
Requires paid sick leave for “service workers” to begin to accrue starting January 1, 2012 (Sec. 2).
Requires paid sick leave to accrue at a rate of 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, and that total sick leave shall not be more than 40 hours per calendar year (Sec. 2).
Authorizes “services workers” to roll over up to 40 hours of paid sick leave from 1 calendar year to the next (Sec. 2).
Requires employers to pay employees at a rate equal to or greater than their normal salary (Sec. 2).
