Title: Limits Public School Class Sizes

Vote to adopt a conference report that limits public school class sizes.

Highlights:

  • Requires that the average class size for kindergarten through third grade not exceed 20 students to 1 teacher in a given school administrative unit for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years (Sec. 2).
  • Requires that the actual size of any given kindergarten through third grade class not exceed 23 students to 1 teacher for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years (Sec. 2).

  • Requires that the average class size for kindergarten through third grade not exceed 19 student to 1 teacher in a given school administrative unit for the 2019-2020 school year (Sec. 2).

  • Requires that the actual size of any given kindergarten through third grade class not exceed 22 students to 1 teacher for the 2019-2020 school year (Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that the class size requirements set forth in General Statute 115C-301 will apply beginning with the 2020-2021 school year (Sec. 2).

  • Requires a ratio not to exceed 191 students to 1 teach for supplemental classes, such as languages or physical education, offered and the kindergarten through fifth grade levels (Sec. 3).

  • Increases funding for pre-kindergarten programs (Sec. 7).
