Title: Prohibits Distracted Driving

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits distracted driving.

Highlights:

 

  • Prohibits operating a vehicle on a public street or highway while using the person’s hands to engage in distracted driving behavior that impairs or otherwise restricts the proper operation of the motor vehicle and results in careless or reckless operation (Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that for the purposes of this act distracted behavior includes the use of a handheld mobile telephone and or use of a handheld electric device (Sec. 2).

  • Establishes a monetary fine of $100 for an infraction made under this act (Sec. 2).

  • Exempts the following from the above mentioned provisions, including, but not limited to (Sec. 2):

    • An emergency first response operator;

    • Public or privately owned ambulance or service;

    • A hospital, fire department, or law enforcement agency.
