Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits transgender female students from participating in school sports, from kindergarten through college, in private and public schools.

Highlights:

• Requires any interscholastic or intramural athletic team or sport sponsored by an educational institution in Arizona to be designated by one of the following based biological sex (Sec 1):

• Males. men, or boys;

• Females. women or girls; or

• Coed or mixed-sex. 

• Defines “educational institution” as any of the following (Sec 1):

• A public school; 

• A private school that is a member of an interscholastic athletic association or organization; 

• A university under the jurisdiction of the Arizona board of regents; 

• A community college or;

• Any other institution of higher education that is a part of a national athletic association.

• Prohibits females from participating on sports teams that have been designated for males (Sec 1). 

• Authorizes a student to establish their sex by providing a signed physician’s statement that indicates the sex of the student based upon their genetic makeup (Sec 1). 

• Prohibits any government entity, accrediting organization, or athletic association from filing a complaint against any educational institution for separating females from participating on sports teams that have been designated for males (Sec 1). 

• Specifies that individuals, organizations, and institutions that experience retaliation or loss of athletic opportunity for enforcing this requirement are entitled to damages or other relief if civil action is taken within 2 years of the occurrence (Sec 1).
