Title: Increases Distracted Driving Penalties
Vote to pass a bill that increases distracted driving penalties.
Prohibits an individual from using an electronic device while driving a motor vehicle unless under the following circumstances, including, but not limited to (Sec. 1):
The vehicle is as far away from the center of a roadway as possible and entirely stopped from traveling;
They are using an electronic device in a voice-activated or hands-free mode;
They are using the electronic device to make an emergency call to first responders;
Law enforcement or workers of public transit systems or utility companies; or
Transportation network company drivers engaged in prearranged rides, provided that the vehicle is not in motion.
Specifies that violators shall be found guilty of a moving violation and authorizes law enforcement to issue warnings in lieu of citations to individuals found to have violated the aforementioned prohibitions up until January 1, 2024 (Sec. 10).
Increases distracted driving penalties to the following, including (Sec. 15):
From a $45 to $100 fine for first offense;
An additional $500 fine or suspension of a license for 90 days for a violation resulting in serious injury; and
An additional $1,000 fine or suspension of a license for 180 days for a violation resulting in death.
