Reason for Seeking Public Office:
Why? This is the first question I get asked. It's interesting, most of the people who ask me this share my love for our community, county, and country, but behind their question is really the expression of: "Are you sure you really want to put up with all the hassle and give up that much time?" I know exactly why people feel this way. Political office is rarely seen as public service anymore.
However, in my view this challenge is no different than any other we face in our lives. If something is not right at work or in your home it doesn't get better by ignoring it. I think by and large we as a country are guilty of being too complacent when we see policy and practices shifting in a way in which we don't agree. We blame it on special interest groups -- to which most of us belong through our professional or vocational organizations -- but we don't think of our associations as "special interests." We blame it on the "power of the incumbency" but we don't take the time to truly educate ourselves, our families, and our friends about the issues and make certain to never miss an election or opportunity to vote. And more than anything - we blame our lack of being able to affect the process on being too busy.
Yet we all get the same 24 hours each day, and ultimately it is a choice of what we are busy with that reveals our priorities. Now I am not saying that everyone should be running for office or volunteering for a cause. (Unless it's volunteering for my campaign.) For the last 20 years I have been too busy building a business and raising a family to dedicate this much time to public service. As a young father and new business owner -- that's where my priorities were needed. Yet we can all do our part. If we see things heading in a wrong direction, I think it is incumbent upon us, as free citizens in a nation enjoying so much liberty that many people die to get into and die defending -- that we use our freedom to respectfully express our views and back them with our actions. We need to vote our principles over our pocketbooks. If we did this consistently our pocketbooks would take care of themselves.
I want my children to enjoy that same freedom and sense of obligation. That's why I am running, and that's why I am willing to tolerate the potential challenges of public service and give up the time to do so.
