During his senior year at St. John's, Karl received a number awards, including being named to the 1981 Washington Post All Metropolitan Basketball Team. Karl played with and against Michael Jordon, Patrick Ewing, Adrian Branch, Anthony Jones, Bob Ferry, and other All Stars in the 1981 McDonalds Capital Classic.
At Penn, Karl excelled In the classroom, on campus, and on the basketball court. Karl received the prestigious Spoon Award, highest honor bestowed on a member of the senior class, and was a two-time captain, MVP, and All-Ivy League basketball player.
Karl was the first African American Managing Partner of an AM LAW 100 law firm. The National Law Journal has recognized Karl as one of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in the United States.
