North Carolina Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Unknown Position Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Being a Catholic and as an Attorney, I believe in protecting the life of EVERY human. The freedom to access safe, high quality medical procedures, when absolutely necessary, should be within the province of the expecting mother (or parents), her physician and her God. I strongly support preventative measures (e.g. abstinence) and adoptions.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Unknown Position Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
I propose that the 2017 tax cuts for the top 50 per cent of taxpayers be rescinded and that a minimum income tax should be established for all millionaires, billionaires and corporations.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Unknown Position Do you support increasing defense spending?
Not presently and not without evaluating how effective the recent increases have been utilized and how well we are positioned/situated in long term, state of the art planning. If needed military funding has been diverted to other matters (e.g. the construction of a wall or to compensate for deleterious effects of tariffs) it should be restored.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Unknown Position Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Stimulus spending has been a necessity during economic slowdowns and can be useful in targeting the advancement of small business opportunities or special needs such as the availability of health care. The 2017 lowering of the Corporate tax rate from 35 per cent to 21 per cent was supposedly an incentive to lure businesses back to the U.S., but in fact many corporations were previously escaping ALL tax liability. Thus, I proffered the previous recommendation to establish a corporate tax minimum - notwithstanding the wizardry of some corporate accountants.
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
There should be objectivity and uniformity in approach to assure that State standards are enabling all students to have equal opportunity for educational success and excellence.
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Unknown Position Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
There must be a robust public/private partnership in addressing the growth and proliferation of alternative forms of renewable energy. In addition to preserving our precious environment, it essentially sustains our national security and independence. We MUST proceed with stragic speed!
Unknown Position Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Would have to review the details of the provisions of proposed gun-control legislation. As the son of a WWII Army Master Sergeant and having been raised in the country AND being a gun owner (with a Concealed Weapons Permit), I would closely scrutinize so that the education component is highlighted & voluntariness is emphasized (e.g. voluntary buy back programs) and assure that only the weapons of potential mass destruction are impacted.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
The protections embodied in the Affordable Care Act should be preserved and its viability should be given an opportunity to grow in the marketplace, without being subjected to constant piecemeal attacks. In my opinion, it is the third component of our health care system that could be the bridge to lowering costs and promoting efficiency in our system of delivering health care. The second, the private market, could gravitate toward synthesizing functions with ACA, while preserving its independence. Meanwhile, first, due to the commonality of interests and health care needs of its recipients, Medicare should be left to function independently.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
Unknown Position Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Modern technology affords us a myriad of law enforcement tools without a Byzantine wall. Meanwhile, Congress should develop policy, in collaboration with the Executive branch, to enable a transition to permanent residency and possible citizenship for those immigrants who are productive workers and without criminal records.
Unknown Position Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Unknown Position Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
We need a long term, well-defined and clear doctrine for reducing conflicts and to try to provide incentives for fledgling countries not to develop nuclear weapons & not utilize biological or chemical weapons. Military force should be the last option!!!. Further, we must reinforce our outward support for our dependable allies and traditional, proven international partners, and NOT appease dictators/despots - while ignoring their murderous transgressions. Restoring the roles of our State Department experts and utilizing their best advice in crafting policy, in collaboration with the Congress, would allow for greater stability and confidence in our ultimate foreign policy decision-making.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
Smart free trade that is balancing our policy to segue with and overcome restrictions other countries may try to impose.
1. Stimulating robust job growth for residents throughout the mixed rural and urban communities in the 9th Congressional District (emphasizing the recruitment of high wage industries & promoting the initiation/growth of small businesses); 2. Assuring universal access to medical insurance and high quality health care (including mental health services & dental care) for all citizens; and 3. Increasing the availability of safe, decent, affordable housing opportunities for every resident - including those who presently are homeless.
