What is the Political Courage Test?

North Carolina Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Reproductive rights are a human right, which includes the right to have an abortion.
No In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
We support an income tax increase on the highest tax bracket, and we would support creating new brackets covering even higher income levels. For too long, the wealthiest in this country have been allowed to hoard their wealth while the rest of us struggle. Tax increases, and a wealth tax in particular, are a good first step in reversing this disparity. The richest among us should be more than willing to financially support the society that gave them all they have.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Only grassroots campaigns can truly be held to account by The People. We must get big money out of politics by overturning Citizens United and hamstringing Super PACs. We support publicly-funded elections.
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
We support auditing and reducing the bloated military budget, and then allocating those funds to more constructive avenues: education, public housing, repairing our infrastructure, combating climate change, and improving healthcare.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Metrics we use to determine the "health" of our economy fail to illustrate the situation of most Americans who own no shares on the market. The strength of Wall St. means nothing to folks who can't afford their insulin. When the economy grows, hardly anyone's lifestyle changes. When the economy falls, most Americans risk losing their houses and jobs. Corporate tax breaks are the favored choice of trickle-down economics ideologues, but they do little more than put money back in the hands of the wealthy.
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
In general, we support federal education standards. These have traditionally failed due to poor policy mechanics and inadequate funding, such as the unfunded mandate of No Child Left Behind. More critical than a standardized curriculum, we must first address the impact of poor infrastructure and poverty in education. Our standards and funding must enable modernizing school facilities to remove environmental hazards, as well as ensuring all students have three guaranteed, free meals year-round. A child cannot learn while they are hungry, or while they're in an environmentally unsafe building.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
The massive jobs program known as the Green New Deal would include provisions for radically divesting from fossil fuels and encouraging investment in more renewable sources. The implemented GND would also assist residents in upgrading their personal infrastructure with solar panel roofs and the like. The United States must be a global leader on reducing carbon emissions and regulating the pollution we create. A simple cap and trade policy is inadequate for beating this crisis.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
We recognize an overwhelming need for solutions to our gun violence problem. However, extreme care must be taken to present solutions that work without infringing on the rights of gun owners. This generally means that we support legislation already in place, but we are uncomfortable with proposed legislation that, while well-intentioned, would have an adverse impact on marginalized communities (as the original assault weapons ban was used to disarm the Black Panthers) and encourage more oppressive policing tactics (in how "Red Flag" laws enable police to ignore Due Process).
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
The ACA was a poorly-designed compromise position on the need for universal healthcare. It should be replaced with a comprehensive Medicare for All plan that makes healthcare free at the point of service for all residents. Healthcare is a human right. In the richest country on the planet, no resident should be unable to afford their medication. While the ACA was a step towards addressing the needs of the under and uninsured, it simply doesn't go far enough to root out systemic problems.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
The border wall is a monument to a racist demagogue and a symbol of the worst America has to offer. No federal funds should be allocated to its construction. We should be welcoming refugees and immigrants with open arms, especially considering America's role in destabilizing many parts of the world. We support a radically shortened, simplified path to citizenship. We believe fascist government agencies like ICE should be abolished, as they do little more than terrorize our most vulnerable residents.
No Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Yes Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
Considering our history of lying about the existence of WMDs to support military invasions, the United States should not be allowed to use this justification. We must end this era of US Imperialism, halting our involvement in current conflicts and killing our habit of engaging in resource-driven forever wars.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
When it comes to the question of international trade, our primary concern is the worker. While we appreciate this question, we must acknowledge that traditional approaches to this topic fail to grasp the actual weight of the choices the US would make. The US has the power to ensure working conditions for international workers are improved; any conversation about barriers to international trade must take this into consideration. We generally support the removal of barriers like tariffs. We ultimately must create policy to ensure workers' rights are protected around the world.
Our campaign's top three priorities are passing Medicare for All, passing an ecosocialist Green New Deal, and ending the War on Drugs. These top three priorities seek to address the suffering felt by vulnerable and marginalized people in this country and around the world. We must implement solutions that fully meet the scale and urgency of the interwoven problems our country faces.
