Ohio Gubernatorial Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-life a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
The role of government is to protect the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn. As Governor, I will triple home visiting services that intervene early in a woman's pregnancy to provide prenatal care, connections to social supports, and parenting courses. Home visiting stays with that mother until her child reaches 3 to ensure both have the best possible start.

1) Budget Stabilization:Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Ohio's budget.

No a) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
No c) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
No d) An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Thanks to strong Republican leadership, Ohio's economy is strong, and there is no current threat of a recession. Accordingly, I have no current plans to reduce benefits, institute furloughs, or increase taxes.
Yes a) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No b) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
c) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
d) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
I believe that state and local governments should not obstruct official federal immigration action, and I disagree with the concept of "sanctuary cities." Issue 1 would be a disaster for Ohio. It will cripple Ohio with some of the most lenient drug laws in the country and attract more drug cartels to do business here. As Lieutenant Governor, I helped implement juvenile justice reform, which safely reduced our juvenile population behind bars. I believe similar reforms could be done in the adult community, but Issue 1 cannot be the vehicle for it.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
b) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
c) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
No e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Ohio?
g) Do you support matching the cost-of-living allowances to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System (OPERS)?
I believe in keeping taxes low and predictable so business can grow. The state should ensure its minimum wage is indexed to inflation I defer to the Boards of Ohio's retirement systems to make these decisions for their members.
a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Ohio?
b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Ohio high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
ESSA has provided Ohio with broader authority to select curriculum. These decisions are best left to states and not Washington, DC bureaucrats. I believe in school choice. Yes. I support DREAMers.
No a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
I will make treating and preventing lead poisoning a priority in my administration.
a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
No b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
No d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
I support the Second Amendment.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Ohio's health care programs?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
No d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Yes f) Should able-bodied citizens Medicaid recipients meet a work requirement to be eligible for benefits?
No g) Do you support repealing the state mandated Medicaid expansion?
I have always opposed the individual mandate. I have always supported coverage for pre-existing conditions, including seven different votes for increased protections for pre-existing conditions while in Congress and the U.S. Senate. I will maintain the Medicaid Expansion, with reforms to improve health outcomes and make the program more sustainable long term.
a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Ohio's anti-discrimination laws?
b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Ohio's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Ohio state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
I believe that Ohio's anti-discrimination laws, as written, protect sexual orientation. I believe that Ohio's anti-discrimination laws, as written, protect gender identity. I have always appointed women to positions of importance within my office. In the U.S. Senate, my Chief of Staff was a woman. As AG, my First Assistant and Senior Advisor are women, as well as more than a dozen others who serve as top advisors, division chiefs, and section chiefs.
First, we must tackle the opioid epidemic. As Governor, I will immediately begin implementing our 12-point Recovery Ohio action plan, which is a comprehensive approach. Second, we have a skills gap in Ohio. Our administration will also work to ensure that every student graduates high school college-ready or on a pathway to a career. Third, I have a bold vision to invest more in early childhood development and in providing services to at-risk, first-time moms to help ensure that every Ohio child gets the very best start in life.
