  • Dave Camp. Project Vote Smart: 1996 Michigan Congressional Political Courage Test. Did Not Check SUPPORT for: "a) Abortions should always be legally available."
  • Dave Camp. Issue Position: Health Care. 23 January 2012. "Additionally, I supported the Stupak Amendment as a person who believes in the right to life, and also because I believe taxpayers who oppose abortions on moral or religious grounds should not be forced to fund such activity." • Dave Camp. Issue Position: Values. 23 January 2012. "Since 1973 when the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding international policy. Other or expanded principles: "My position is that the Iraqis need to do more, and we need to start doing less. We have sacrificed greatly to end a regime that harbored and promoted terrorism, including gassing its own people, but now is the time for free Iraqis to take control. American troops should not remain in Iraq a day longer than necessary, but we cannot simply walk away just as the country is beginning to stabilize. A viable and stable Iraq is vital to the long-term security of our nation, and we must not abandon the mission at this critical time."
  • Dave Camp. H Con Res 28. 112th Congress. Removing Troops from Afghanistan. Dave Camp voted Nay on 03/17/2011. (votesmart.org)

It is important that we provide General McChrystal and all of our men and women in uniform with the resources they need to succeed. Abandoning our efforts there would jeopardize the safety and security of the United States. General McChrystal has designed a strategy that will permit our troops to come home and leave Afghanistan ready to defend and secure its own people against the Taliban. We must support these efforts and I will continue to work for our men and women in uniform to get them whatever support and resources they need." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Give Resources Necessary To Succeed In Afghanistan. 1 December 2009. "I appreciate that the President has finally made a decision about the path forward in Afghanistan. I hope this gives General McChrystal and all our men and women in uniform the resources they need to succeed in Afghanistan. Abandoning our efforts there would jeopardize American's safety. Clearly, the military and American people deserve a winning strategy that allows our troops to come home and Afghanistan to defend and secure its own people against the Taliban." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Camp Statement on Obama Exit Strategy. 23 June 2011. "A stable Afghanistan is vital to U.S. national security. In 2009, the president committed an additional 30,000 troops to help the Afghan people bring stability to their nation and prevent it from reverting to a terrorist safe haven that could threaten the safety and security of the American people. Momentum has been seized from the Taliban, and the death of Osama bin Laden was a true turning point, but security gains remain fragile. The rapid pace at which the president now plans to drawdown troops may jeopardize the hard-fought and significant counterinsurgency achievements of Afghan, U.S., and coalition forces over the last 18 months. Going forward, it is critical the president base drawdown decisions on the operational requirements necessary to achieve the mission that our military commanders were charged with." (votesmart.org)

  • Dave Camp. Issue Position: Economy. 23 January 2012. "Congressman Camp believes we must help businesses create jobs for Michigan families and make the U.S. more attractive to new investment. To accomplish this, Congressman Camp believes we must restrain spending by the federal government; promote economic growth by making tax cuts permanent for families; pass a corporate income tax rate reduction; reform and overhaul a confusing and unfair federal tax code; strengthen schools to make sure we have the best trained, best educated workforce in the world and prepare Michigan workers high-tech jobs; and get tough on immigration enforcement to protect jobs." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act of 2012. 1 August 2012. "Economists have noted that comprehensive tax reform, when paired with appropriate government spending cuts, could lead to the creation of 1 million American jobs in the first year alone [¦] It's clear that my friends on the other side are committed to raising taxes at any cost. Does anyone believe that they're going to use that to reduce the deficit? We'll just see more wasteful Washington spending. This isn't a solution. America is at a crossroad. We've had 40 months of 8 percent unemployment. What do we get from them? Not a solution. We get a political ploy." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Camp Reaction to "Temporary" Economic Stimulus. 18 January 2008. "A revolution in technology has spurred historic gains in productivity and an irreversible trend towards globalization that pose unique challenges to the long-term health of the American economy. And, while a stimulus package as outlined by the President today may well have a positive impact on our economy, it does not increase our competitiveness or encourage economic vitality in the coming years. The rest of the world is aggressively cutting taxes and reaping the benefits. Yet we have failed to address substantive tax reform since Ronald Reagan's first term in office. Disappointingly, this Congress seems intent on ignoring the plight of American businesses and the workers they employ. Worse yet, they have left the door open to massive tax increases for families and job-providers." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Camp Floor Statement on House Stimulus Package. 29 January 2008. "U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, a senior member of the tax-writing Ways and Means committee, today delivered the following remarks on the floor of the House in urging his colleagues to quickly pass a stimulus package and address long-term tax reform. The measure passed 385-35." [¦] ""The bill before is a positive step, and one we should take. However, I don't know a single American who prefers a rebate - even a rebate as generous as this - to a good paying job. So by no means is this the only step we should take if we are going to become truly competitive and create long-term job growth in this country." [¦] ""So, before we congratulate ourselves on this economic stimulus package, we ought to address this jarring trend that is far more dangerous to American prosperity than next quarter's economic forecast." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. A Stimulus That Works. 24 August 2009. "First, we must repeal what isn't working: The President's stimulus includes record levels of government spending that will substantially increase the current deficit. My stimulus package includes a provision precluding any tax increases now or in the future to pay for this new spending. Stimulus spending should be paid for by reducing wasteful government spending, not raising taxes." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Camp Accepts Invite To Attend Fiscal Responsiblity Summit. 20 February 2009. "Last week's stimulus bill doubled the federal deficit, increased our debt payments by nearly $400 billion and put the nation's financial future on even shakier ground," Camp said. "Now, more than ever, we need to get government spending under control and find a sustainable path forward. I look forward to meeting with the President, hearing his ideas and hopefully taking the first step towards reducing the debt, the tax burden on families and protecting the critical services and benefits provided by Social Security and Medicare." This law strengthens judges' ability to determine whether asylum seekers are credible and to consider the circumstances and all relevant factors. "As a former member of the Homeland Security Committee, Congressman Camp knows our soldiers around the globe, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, are engaged in a life and death struggle for our safety. Dave will continue to support the war on terror and use the unsurpassed power of the U.S. armed forces to hunt down terrorists in the shadows where they hide and plot against innocent Americans. Congressman Camp continues to support full funding for our military to ensure that our fighting men and women on the front lines have the best resources. Dave believes we must take the fight to the terrorists, so that we do not have to fight them in the streets of U.S. cities. Every penny spent on our armed forces allows our military to find the terrorists and destroy their networks so we can prevent another 9/11." (votesmart.org)

  • Dave Camp. Plan should be modeled after that of members of Congress, federal employees. 9 March 2005. "The nation's most successful social safety net faces a $3.7 trillion shortfall and without serious changes will have to slash benefits by up to one-third for future generations of retirees. That stark reality was the focus of a House Ways and Means Committee hearing today at which U.S. Rep. Dave Camp (R-Midland), a senior member of the committee, pressed Comptroller General David Walker on adding to Social Security personal savings accounts like those offered to members of Congress and federal employees. "The Thrift Savings Plan has been a huge success," said Camp. "It is a carefully managed program with high participation rates and very low administrative costs which have yielded solid returns on investments. Wouldn't adding a voluntary savings account modeled on the TSP strengthen the current system?" (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Camp: Social Security Proposal a Solid Start'. 23 June 2005. "This measure would change that by directing money from the surplus to fund newly created GROW Accounts. People under the age of 55 will have GROW accounts, or can choose to opt out. The accounts will initially be invested in marketable Treasury bonds. This allows a safe and prudent transition period for the development of personal accounts to protect the Social Security surplus." (votesmart.org)
  • Dave Camp. Issue Position: Social Security. 1 January 2011. "I support voluntary personal accounts for younger workers that would allow them to build a nest egg for retirement that they would own and control, and could pass on to their families. This will permanently strengthen Social Security, without changing benefits for those now in or near retirement, and without raising payroll taxes on workers. Inheritance rights in personal accounts would especially help widows who depend on Social Security and eliminate the need for cumbersome regulations that too often deny individuals from receiving their benefits in a timely fashion." This candidate has responded to a Political Courage Test in a previous election. As a continued effort to provide the American public with factual information on candidates running for public office, these archived responses are made available here.
The Political Courage Test asks candidates which items they will support if elected. It does not ask them to indicate which items they will oppose. Through extensive research of public polling data, we discovered that voters are more concerned with what candidates would support when elected to office, not what they oppose. If a candidate does not select a response to any part or all of any question, it does not necessarily indicate that the candidate is opposed to that particular item.

My position is that the Iraqis need to do more, and we need to start doing less. We have sacrificed greatly to end a regime that harbored and promoted terrorism, including gassing its own people, but now is the time for free Iraqis to take control. American troops should not remain in Iraq a day longer than necessary, but we cannot simply walk away just as the country is beginning to stabilize. A viable and stable Iraq is vital to the long-term security of our nation, and we must not abandon the mission at this critical time.
