What is the Political Courage Test?

Illinois Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I firmly believe women and their physicians should have control over important healthcare decisions. All options should be available to all pregnant women, including safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. As a physician, I have provided care to thousands of pregnant women. Too many politicians do not understand the complexity of womens health issues. As a congressman, I will fight each day to make sure that Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land, and I will stand up to Republican-led efforts to restrict access to safe, legal abortions.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
For far too long, the wealthiest Americans have not paid their fair share of taxes. The federal government must end tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas, and close the loopholes used by wealthy Americans to avoid paying taxes. I will proudly fight efforts to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires, which are inappropriate at a time when the United States is experiencing its highest rate of income inequality since the Great Depression. Under my plan for a fair tax for everyone, the middle class will no longer have to bear the brunt of Americas financial burden.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
The campaign finance system in this country is broken, due to the Supreme Courts disastrous decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Allowing corporations to dump endless amounts of unaccountable money into campaigns undermines our democracy. I do not accept any donations from corporations. Elections should be publicly financed, and super PACs should be eliminated. This country must move to a campaign finance system that ensures our Congress is not simply bought by the wealthy and powerful.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Climate change poses the greatest threat to the well-being of future generations. The science is clear. It is time to act! Americans need leaders who will stand up to the fossil fuel industry and embrace green energy. The technology that harnesses our renewable resources is becoming more efficient and effective. Renewable resources, such as sunlight and wind, are environmentally sustainable, and they are emerging as cheaper options than nonrenewable fossil fuels. All public policy questions should follow the Iroquois tribe Seventh Generation Principle: decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
As an E.R. doctor, I have a true passion when it comes to this issue, because I have had to bear witness all too often to the devastating impact of Congress' failure to act with needed gun control reforms. I never have and never will take a penny from the NRA, and I look forward to receiving a grade of "F" from that organization every year in office. I support the re-implementation of the assault weapons ban that served this country so well from 1994-2004. I stand against concealed carry reciprocity. I support mandatory background checks for every gun purchase.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. I have been a member of Physicians for a National Health Program for over 25 years, a group that advocates for a single-payer healthcare system in the United States. In addition, society benefits economically when everyone has access to quality healthcare. Moving to a single-payer system will save the United States nearly $1 trillion each year and cut the cost of health insurance for working families. Speaking with my physician's voice, I look forward to leading the charge to a single-payer system when I get to Congress.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
We are a nation of immigrants, and it's important that federal immigration policy allows hardworking, ambitious people from other nations to immigrate here. I proudly support a fair and humane immigration policy. In Congress, I will fight for a fair path toward citizenship for those in the United States who are undocumented. People come to the United States to better their lives, but many are denied that opportunity when they arrive. Our immigrant community is under threat from President Trump and the Republican majority in Congress. I will push back against the current inhumane policies that break families apart.
Yes Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
The war on drugs has failed to decrease drug use and cost taxpayers billions of dollars. Current policy also disproportionately impacts communities of color. It is finally time to legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana. Legalization of marijuana has proven to successfully stimulate the economy in Colorado. This policy will generate billions of dollars in tax revenue and reduce the huge financial burden posed by incarcerating non-violent offenders.
No Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
No Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
Recent foreign policy decisions have created an unstable situation in the Middle East, put American service members at risk, cost the federal government trillions of dollars, and caused American foreign relations to suffer. Military force should only be used as a last resort, and diplomatic efforts must be made to resolve problems. It is important that the United States has the confidence of its allies and works with other nations diplomatically to solve problems.
Single-payer healthcare, a $15/hour minimum wage, and tuition-free access to public higher education and trade schools. Single-payer would be funded through a Medicare-like tax, and would save money for 95% of households. Tuition-free access would be funded by a small financial transactions tax on Wall Street transactions.
