  • "Access to reproductive health care, including safe and legal abortion, is in jeopardy. That is why I voted to pass the Women's Health Protection Act, which will codify the rights enshrined by Roe v. Wade into law and protect this fundamental right across the country. I will continue fighting to ensure that happens. If this report holds true, the Supreme Court of the United States has taken our nation in the wrong direction, risking the lives of not only women but all Americans. Regulating access to reproductive health care is about one thing; control. The impact of this decision will fall hardest on people who already face discriminatory obstacles to health care in the first place--particularly people of color, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, young people, undocumented people, and those having difficulty making ends meet. As we look towards the future, we have a responsibility to use every tool at our disposal to protect your right to make your own decisions related to your health care, free of intrusion." • "Marilyn strongly supports a woman’s right to choose and was proud to vote for the Women’s Health Act. She will continue fighting attempts to restrict access to birth control and women’s health care. Reproductive rights are not just a health issue for women, it is an economic empowerment issue, which is why it is crucial that we act to protect women’s rights and reproductive freedom. In Congress, Marilyn has been a champion for reproductive rights. A member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, she has called on the Department of Health & Human Services to reduce barriers to continuous access to birth control by requiring insurance companies to cover a 12-month supply of birth control. She has also co-led the introduction of legislation to ensure service members receive the quality reproductive health care they deserve. Marilyn is also a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, and cosponsored the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act. She will continue to protect funding for Planned Parenthood and access to birth control, and will oppose all attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade." (stricklandforwashington.com)
  • "Affordable health care should be accessible to everyone. Thanks to her father’s military service and veteran status, her family always had access to the medical care they needed. In Congress, she is fighting to expand access to health so that everyone , regardless of income, employment or citizenship status, has affordable, equitable, high-quality health care. She fought for expanded tax credits in the American Rescue Plan that lowered health care costs for tens of thousands of people in the South Sound. Marilyn is dedicated to lowering the cost of prescription drugs and is a cosponsor of legislation allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, resulting in lower drug prices for those on private insurance as well as Medicare. She also voted for the Affordable Insulin for All Act, which would cap insulin prices at $35 per month. She also supports adding a public health care option, which will increase coverage, lower prices, and lead to better plans from private insurers. She cosponsors legislation lowering the eligibility age for Medicare and supports increasing the age for children to stay on their parents’ insurance. Marilyn will continue to fight to strengthen protections for people with preexisting conditions and end surprise billings, and she will continue to advocate patent reform so generic drugs can come to market more quickly, which will lower the cost of prescriptions." • "The economic crisis caused by the COVID pandemic has highlighted just how important it is for the government to provide stable retirement benefits, and for employers to honor their promise to workers and pay full pensions. In Congress, she cosponsors legislation to strengthen and extend Social Security and take steps to make it solvent into the future. She will continue to support full funding for both Social Security and Medicare and push to increase contributions for federal pensions so that workers receive the full benefits they deserve. Marilyn understands that Social Security and Medicare are EARNED benefits and she’ll do everything to not only protect what you’ve earned, but to increase benefits to Social Security while preserving solvency. She has also fought to lower the cost of prescription drugs and is a cosponsor of legislation directing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, which would lower drug costs for those on Medicare and private insurance alike." • "As the daughter of a black father and a Korean mother, Marilyn grew up with a unique understanding of the structural inequities facing communities of color. In too many instances our criminal justice system has been unjust and has exacerbated – rather than solved – the underlying issues of race and bias in America. Marilyn has been fighting to reform the criminal justice system and supported the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act. She also introduced the Enhancing Oversight to End Discrimination in Policing Act with Senator Elizabeth Warren to improve public safety for our communities nationwide. As Mayor, she helped build trust between police and communities of color through Project PEACE and worked with the Obama Administration to launch My Brother’s Keeper in Tacoma to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential. Marilyn created the Office of Equity and Human Rights at the City of Tacoma to promote hiring for city jobs to reflect our community. She endorsed and supported I-940, the statewide initiative to increase the use of de-escalation training and set a new standard for use of force by the police. Marilyn supported “ban the box” legislation in Tacoma to encourage local employers to consider a job candidate’s qualifications first without the stigma of a conviction or arrest record. Her work for economic and social justice has been recognized by Tabor 100, Blacks in Government Region X, and the Tacoma NAACP. Marilyn’s leadership has moved us forward, but more needs to be done. She is committed to reforming our criminal justice system to be fair, equitable and just, and she will continue to bring that fight to Congress." (stricklandforwashington.com)

  • "Police play an integral role in keeping the South Sound safe and they need additional resources to implement community-oriented policing, increase training, and deploy resources. Congress must ensure that our local law enforcement agencies have the funding they need to fully protect our communities." (www.facebook.com)
  • "From housing security in high-cost, high-growth areas, to making sure no military family goes hungry, to supporting a diverse & talented workforce, to expanding child care access & jobs for military spouses-- investments in military communities are an investment in our readiness." (twitter.com)
  • "Great to meet with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin yesterday. As the House Committee On Armed Services begins building the National Defense Authorization Act for the upcoming year, Congress and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) need to show that we value servicemembers and their families, like those at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in my district, who sacrifice so much to keep us safe and secure. We need to invest in the infrastructure that helps servicemembers and their families thrive. From supporting housing security in high-cost, high-growth areas, to making sure no military family goes hungry, to expanding child care access and jobs for military spouses-- investments in military communities are an investment in our nation’s readiness. As we examine our workforce within the Department of Defense, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion not only supports our readiness but ensures that we can both recruit and retain the most talented and innovative servicemembers in the world. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues, Chairman Rep. Adam Smith, and President Joe Biden to make sure that we are investing in our military communities in the FY22 NDAA." (www.facebook.com)
  • "Investments in military personnel and their families are an investment in our nation’s readiness. Every defense budget must demonstrate that we value servicemembers and their families, like those at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, who sacrifice so much to keep us safe and secure. I am pleased to have secured several provisions in this year’s NDAA to address housing security, hunger, and help all servicemembers and their families thrive. The wins in this agreement will serve as a strong foundation to build on as we continue to address housing in high-cost regions, food insecurity, racial equity, extremism and more. As this agreement heads to the Senate, I’m proud to have worked with Chairman Rep. Adam Smith and my colleagues to advance a defense budget that supports our national security, military survivors of sexual trauma, a much-deserved pay increase for servicemembers, and critical steps forward to address housing and hunger issues." • "In Congress, Marilyn is fighting to build a more inclusive economy that works for all of us. She has championed infrastructure investments in transportation, utilities, and affordable housing, and voted for the bipartisan infrastructure package to create jobs and support workers. She knows that our caregivers and parents are the backbone of our economy, and has voted for permanent refundability of the Child Tax Credit, and key investments for our long-term care workforce to serve our seniors." • "Climate change is one of the most serious long-term threats to our nation and the world. That’s why in Congress, Marilyn has worked with her colleagues to advance the recommendations put forward by the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and to protect Puget Sound. She helped re-launch the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, and then secured historic funding increases for Puget Sound restoration. She also has called for the elimination of a toxic chemical killing coho salmon in the Pacific Northwest, highlighted the need for more federal investment in tribal communities and conservation, and fought the plan to expand offshore drilling. She is working to reinstate regulations on emissions and protections for our public lands and will advocate for rebuilding the EPA, especially offices and programs designed to track the health and environmental impacts of pollution in under-served communities. Marilyn will keep working to invest in renewable energy in pursuit of a carbon-free future so it is easier for consumers of energy and transportation to make better choices for clean air and clean water." • "The crisis of gun violence in America touches every corner of our country and every community. Fighting gun violence is essential to protecting our kids and communities, and we know there are solutions that can save lives. In Congress, Marilyn is standing up for responsible solutions like universal background checks for gun purchases and restoration of the ban on military style assault weapons and high capacity magazines. It should be harder, not easier, for felons, domestic abusers, and terrorists to buy dangerous weapons. As a cosponsor of the bipartisan Bipartisan Background Checks Act, and the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, she is working across the aisle to protect our families, and prevent gun violence. As Mayor of Tacoma, Marilyn passed mandatory background checks and closed the gun show loophole in Tacoma while she was Mayor. The gun lobby threatened to sue, and she was steadfast in her commitment to putting the safety of South Sound communities first.and well being of residents first." (stricklandforwashington.com)

  • "I support universal health care. That means we find a path to get to the point where every single person who calls America home has access to health care that is affordable, accessible and equitable. This is a very important distinction, because different people have different interactions with the health care system,” said Strickland. “With that said, I support building on the Affordable Care Act. There are 20 million people who were not insured who now have access to the Affordable Care Act. We can add a public option to this, and by adding a public option, we provide people with choice." - (washingtonstatewire.com)
  • "I had the pleasure of talking with @ChildCareAware about building a robust care economy through policies like paid leave & making the #ChildTaxCredit permanent. Millions of families depend on #caregiving - it's time we recognize this critical infrastructure." - (twitter.com)

  • "As the daughter of an immigrant, Marilyn understands the challenges experienced by our immigrant population. She supports comprehensive immigration reform that focuses on streamlining the process of legal permanent residency, creating a fair pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in this country, and protections for DREAMERs. Marilyn will fight to shut down the for-profit detention facilities that lock up children and will fight the cruel policy of separating migrant families. Marilyn will also work to expand visa caps – immigrants are an essential part of the American identity and the U.S. economy as workers and entrepreneurs who bring skills, diverse perspectives, and innovation. By raising caps on visas, we can help attract the brightest and the best the world has to offer to the United States." (stricklandforwashington.com)

  • "Last week, I had a great conversation with members of the Washington Council on International Trade, where we discussed the importance of trade to our local economy here in Washington’s 10th Congressional District. Ensuring equitable trade with international partners is not only good for Washington state, it’s good for the nation. I look forward to working with members of the council to find bipartisan solutions to improving the United States’ international trade practices." (www.facebook.com)
