Texas Organizing Project

Description

Texas Organizing Project organizes Black and Latino communities in Dallas, Harris and Bexar counties with the goal of transforming Texas into a state where working people of color have the power and representation they deserve. Texas is a big and diverse state, and considering the evolving social makeup and the widespread need for improvement in areas of health care, poverty and education, community organizing has never been more important in Texas than it is today. Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the country, and the second highest rate of uninsured children. Texas has the 5th highest poverty rate in the country, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Texas ranks 50th in high school graduation rate. In order to address these and other critical issues, Texas needs an empowered and organized people. TOP provides hard working Texans the opportunity to implement real change by organizing their own neighborhoods, investing their time and energy in causes relevant to their respective communities, and collectively taking ownership over TOP's agenda, strategy and direction. With a seasoned and committed organizing staff, a diverse membership and leaders from all walks of life, TOP has already made a huge impact and is positioned to continue to grow.
