Cotton Statement on the Social Security Administration Trustees' Report on the OASDI Trust Funds

Issues: Senior Citizens

Senator Tom Cotton released the following statement on the Social Security Administration Trustees' report on the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trust Funds:

"The dire financial situation of the Federal Disability Insurance trust fund threatens the sustainability of this critical program. In Arkansas, we have the third highest usage of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in the country. And in my home of Yell County, approximately one in ten of our working age population benefits from this important safety net. It is imperative that Congress takes action to save SSDI and protect fellow citizens who are disabled.

"But simply throwing money at the problem isn't the solution. We must implement common-sense reforms to ensure the long-term sustainability of the SSDI program. For example, the current program fails to help those with temporary disabilities recover and return to work. We should provide those individuals with better support and give them the tools they need to reenter the workforce and reach their full potential.

"Rest assured, I am committed to protecting social security for current and future generations. In the coming months, I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reform Social Security Disability Insurance and ensure the long-term success of this program."
