U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced a bill to modernize the U.S. tax code to reflect the U.S. Supreme Court's June 26 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. The Equal Dignity for Married Taxpayers Act, which was cosponsored by the full Democratic caucus, would replace gender-specific references to marriage such as "husband" and "wife" with "married couple" and "spouse."
"Marriage equality is now the law of the land across our country and our tax code should reflect that," said Brown. "We need to move past outdated language and embrace language that is inclusive of all marriages and families."
Brown is a long-time supporter of marriage equality. In April, Brown met with Jim Obergefell, a Cincinnati resident and the plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges. In March, Brown joined 43 of his Senate colleagues and 167 members of the House of Representatives in filing an amicus brief in the Supreme Court stating that all couples deserve the right to marry no matter the state that they live in.
